Reid Rattan Task Chair: Armless, Steel Frame, Foot Pads Not Wheels, 125kg Rated

By Furniture1002 min read

Reid mid-century brown swivel task chair with a rattan backrest on a matte black steel frame

The Reid is the simplest chair in our office range and the one to choose for a wooden floor. A breathable rattan back panel, a tufted faux leather seat, and a matte black steel frame on non-slip foot pads, rated to 125kg. It swivels. It does not lift, tilt or roll, and that is what makes it work where a chair on castors would not.

What it is

An armless mid-century task chair. The back is a rattan panel that lets air through and gives slightly as you lean. The seat is faux leather with classic tufting, over padding. The frame is matte black steel, and each foot ends in a non-slip protective pad. The seat swivels 360 degrees.

The product page states a weight capacity of 125kg, and names hardwood, laminate and tile as floors the pads suit. Some assembly is required.

Who it suits

Someone with a wooden or tiled floor and a standard height desk, who wants a desk chair that will not mark the floor or wander across it. It suits a bedroom desk, a study with boards, or a compact workspace where a five-star base would take too much room.

Because nothing adjusts, measure your desk against the seat before ordering. It is less suited to a shared desk or a long day for someone who needs arms and a lean; for that, the Nash is the fully adjustable rattan chair.

Reid or Nash

Same idea, two levels of mechanism.

  • Reid: armless, black steel, foot pads, swivel only. Simpler, lighter, floor-safe.
  • Nash: wooden arms, silver frame, swivel, tilt, height adjustment, locking wheels.

Living with it

Wipe the seat with a damp cloth. Brush the rattan back with a soft brush or the vacuum attachment rather than wetting it. Check the foot pads occasionally for grit, which is what would scratch a floor. Our guide to cane and rattan covers looking after a woven back.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Reid have wheels?

No. It sits on a matte black steel frame with non-slip protective foot pads, and the seat swivels 360 degrees in place. The product page names hardwood, laminate and tile as floors it suits, which is the point of pads over castors.

Is it height adjustable?

No. It swivels but does not lift or tilt. Measure your desk against the seat before ordering, because there is no adjustment to correct a mismatch.

How much weight does it take?

The product page states a weight capacity of 125kg.

Why a rattan back?

It breathes. A woven panel lets air through and gives slightly, so it supports your back without the heat of an upholstered one. It is also what makes the chair look like a piece of mid-century furniture rather than a task chair.

What is the difference between the Reid and the Nash?

Both have a rattan back and a faux leather seat. The Nash has wooden arms, a silver frame, and swivels, tilts, lifts and rolls on locking wheels. The Reid is armless on a black steel frame with foot pads, and only swivels. The Reid is simpler and safer on a wooden floor; the Nash is the full task chair.
